Roots of

Resilience

Brief: In response to the Tunisian president Kais Saied's speech that created distress in the community, this film combines footage of various subjects with a song about the racism faced by immigrants.

Year : 2023

Description :

This project explores how the deconstruction of the mechanics of colonisation, whilst simultaneously reformulating and reconfiguring different notions of identity and postcolonial solidarity through found footage, can create an irruptive diasporic audio-visual vernacular. This will entail understanding the film-making tools, a multi-array of subjects, and its relationship to the audio being played, working with a strong ethical code and developing filmmaking as an archival tool in itself.

About the project :

  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of the cultural context and sensitivity towards the Tunisian community through direct engagement, particularly with black immigrants, to understand their experiences, challenges, and aspirations. This fostered trust and collaboration, allowing the film to authentically capture and represent their stories and perspectives.

  • Embodies the medium of film as a tool for social change and empowerment. By combining found footage with original sound, particularly a song about racism faced by immigrants, the film creates a powerful narrative that resonates with the audience. This not only raised awareness about the issue but also provided a platform for marginalized voices to be heard and amplified.

  • By prioritizing ethical practices, the project ensures consent and collaboration at every stage of the project, which contributes to its success and integrity.

  • Through screenings and online sharing, the film reached a wide audience, raising awareness about the issue of racism faced by black immigrants in Tunisia. The positive response from viewers, including shock from foreign audiences unaware of the situation, highlights the project's effectiveness in sparking conversations and promoting understanding across diverse audiences.
