Brief: To explore the act of freeing words to express content in a new dimension of scale, volume, and movement, thereby forcing the reader to become a viewer.

Description:

Translation—the conversion of meaning across mediums— is an essential part of ethnography. What happens when we bring our typographic language into the physical space? By liberating type from the confines of the page, it creates a new relationship to language in our ability to feel versus only read the content, which may be the key to reviving some of the lost meaning during translation.   

 

About the project :

  • Demonstrates an innovative approach to the concept of translation, moving beyond traditional linguistic interpretations to explore how typography and design can convey meaning across different mediums, inviting viewers to experience content in a tactile and visual dimension.

  • Seeks to maintain a user-centered design process, gaining feedback and insights from linguistics specialists and community members. This collaborative approach ensures that the design solutions are informed by the needs and perspectives of diverse audiences, enhancing their relevance and effectiveness.

  • A strong commitment to multidisciplinary skill development, experimenting with a wide range of techniques and materials, including printmaking, laser cutting, 3D printing, and physical computing. By integrating these design process, it elevates the outcome to stay dynamic and engaging, pushing the boundaries of traditional typography and communication design.

  • By delving into theoretical frameworks such as structuralism, psycholinguistics, and semiotics, the project engages in critical reflection and conceptual exploration, developing a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between language, perception, and communication.
