Brief: An inquiry into participatory archiving that explores the best practice to preserve the identity of Tuvalu - an island that is going to drown in 30 years.

Year : 2023

Description :

The island of Tuvalu is said to be the first modern nation to be submerged underwater within 30 years. The government aims to use the metaverse and blockchain technology to preserve the island’s rights, but is this an appropriate and sustainable means, or is it simply an echo chamber of the same illusion of the digital permanence of data? Using plexure, this project delves into the art of storing archives in an analog object, using weaving as a medium that has a natural attitude to express and connects intimate and cultural concerns.

About the project :

  • Delving into the complexities of climate change and its impact on Tuvalu, this project utilizes research including conversations with natives, exploration of existing preservation methods, and consideration of the cultural significance of traditional practices like weaving.

  • Rather than relying solely on digital preservation methods like the metaverse and blockchain, this project proposes a unique approach using weaving and crochet techniques. This not only preserves the cultural heritage of Tuvalu but also challenges the assumptions about digital permanence and sustainability.

  • Actively engages with the Tuvaluan community, seeking their input and incorporating their stories into the project. This participatory approach ensures the preservation efforts align with the community's needs and values. Additionally, the consideration of the environmental impact of digital preservation methods demonstrates empathy at a grassroots level.
